In this 1-day workshop, we'll tackle the essential techniques to a successful alla prima oil painting. Alla prima, meaning 'at first go' in Italian, refers to paintings that are done all at once and is a common technique utilized in plein air painting. This requires different techniques when working with oils since you don't have the opportunity to let paintings dry and work in layers!

With a combination of lecture, demonstrations and painting time with instructor feedback and guidance, students will leave with 1-2 finished paintings.

With a variety of subject matters to choose from (still life, landscape, portrait, etc), students will explore the wet-on-wet techniques required for alla prima while painting their individual subjects. There will be still lifes provided, and students are welcome to bring reference photos for other subject matters.

All supplies are included OR you can provide your own. If you are providing your own, you need to bring everything on the list. (see list under SUPPLY tab)

We’ll take a short break for lunch. You’re welcome to head out, bring your own food, or make your day extra special with a delicious lunch from Cambridge Market!

Alla Prima Oil Painting: Supply List
These supplies are simply suggestions that I like to use, and what I recommend getting started with. If you have materials that you are comfortable with, that’s fine. Feel free to email- katie.hogan.art@gmail.com with any questions.
● 2 Canvases of your choice, recommend around 10” x 12” each, you can go larger or smaller if desired.
● Variety of Paintbrushes, long-handled, any brand.
○ Try to pick a couple different ones (filberts, flats, rounds) that you’d like to experiment with. Select a variety of sizes as well.
○ Have at least one large bristle round, and one small bristle round
● A Palette Knife
● Oil Paint of any brand in the following palette: (this is the basic recommended palette, you can absolutely purchase / bring additional pigments if you would like.)
○ Titanium White
○ Cadmium Red Light
○ Alizarin Crimson

○ Cadmium Yellow Medium
○ Cerulean Blue
○ Ultramarine Blue
○ Raw Umber
● Palette for oils. The Masterson palette usually works best for storage and longevity.

Need to purchase supplies? Here are some recommendations:
- Lynn's of Madison on the Westside (truly local!)
- Artist and Craftsmen downtown, off of State St
- The Art Hatchery in Stoughton. A second hand art store, so they won't have everything, but can be a cheaper alternative and helps avoid things going to the landfill.
- If you'd like to order online, I recommend Blick! Decent prices, but it can be overwhelming if you don't know what you're looking for yet.
